Creating sustainable change with a Ballina Exercise Physiologist
New Leaf Health is revolutionising health care through a combination of targeted exercise rehabilitation for physical injuries and conditions, alongside motivational coaching. Operating out of CrossFit Ballina, our lead Accredited Exercise Physiologist, James Hulme (BExSc, MClinExPhys, ESSAM), brings a master's level qualification from Southern Cross University and extensive expertise in helping clients recover and perform at their best.
Meet James: My Journey to New Leaf Health
When I was young, I used to spend a lot of time at the gym. Unsure of what I wanted to do for a career initially, I started studying a business degree, but I soon realised that I wanted a path where I could work directly with people. Because of my deep passion for fitness and training, I decided to pivot and pursue exercise science.
My studies and high-performance background—including gaining hands-on experience in elite environments through exchanges in California and the University of Minnesota—shaped my comprehensive, evidence-based approach to physical rehabilitation. Having lived in the Northern Rivers since 2004 and battling my own mental health challenges over the years, I understand the powerful role exercise plays as a tool for managing stress, anxiety, and depression.
Today, I combine my clinical expertise with a calm, supportive environment to help clients overcome physical injuries, navigate mental health, and build a sustainable relationship with their health.
Exercise Physiology for Mental Health Support
New Leaf Health was born from a personal understanding of how challenging navigating mental health can be. Having spent years developing and refining the tools to manage stress, anxiety, and depression, our founding Accredited Exercise Physiologist, James Hulme, recognises the profound impact movement can have on the mind.
We are deeply passionate about improving mental health support in the community, translating lived insight and the latest evidence-based practice into a safe, calm environment. You can expect a compassionate, non-judgmental approach to each session as you steadily build a sustainable, empowering relationship with your health.
